Focusing on Children’s Dentistry for Brighter Smiles

Dental health is essential for all ages, and we want to be there for all your children’s dental health needs. At Sixth Line Family Dental Oakville, we want to ensure that your children are comfortable at the dentist.

A good experience at the dentist’s office from a young age can set your children up for success and a future of good oral hygiene habits. When your children learn that our dedicated team is in their corner, they’ll feel comfortable making their own appointments in the future.

Providing Dental Care Early

Young children cannot clean their own teeth, so cleaning them will be up to you. As a parent, you must familiarize yourself with practicing good oral hygiene habits with your children.

Knowing when to start cleaning your child’s mouth can be difficult to pin down, but you should start cleaning your children’s teeth before they even grow them. This process is a great way to build good habits early and ensure they get used to the action of cleaning their teeth.

Here are some steps you should follow when cleaning your child’s mouth:

  • Lie your baby down in a comfortable place
  • Make sure you can see clearly into your baby’s mouth
  • Use a soft baby brush and brush or wipe your child’s gums and teeth
  • Avoid using toothpaste until your child has teeth

The First Visit

Ramping up to the first visit to the dentist can be challenging for both you and your child. Knowing what to expect can be helpful and assist in preparation for that first visit.

Your children should visit the dentist for an examination 6 months after their first tooth comes in, or by 1 year of age. This first visit detects any possible issues and determines if your cleaning methods from home are effective.

X-rays may also be taken to inform your dentist of how your children’s teeth are growing and if they are growing in properly.

When your child’s permanent molars have developed, our team may suggest sealing them to protect them from cavities with a sealant. This plastic seals their teeth and helps guard your children’s teeth against cavities.

Our team will also look for crooked or crowded teeth. Crooked or overcrowded teeth will usually disappear as your child’s jaw grows in, but if they do not straighten out, it can signify a bite problem.

Sixth Line Family Dental can work together with you and come up with solutions.

Consistency with dental exams is not just essential for adults. Following their first exam, you should bring your children in to receive a dental exam every 6 months to monitor any developing dental issues.

This bi-yearly exam schedule can do wonders for prevention and work to ensure your children’s oral health.
