The Need for Extractions or Surgery
When people think of tooth extraction and oral surgery, wisdom tooth extraction is usually what comes to mind. While we do offer wisdom tooth removal at Sixth Line Family Dental at our Oakville clinic, that’s not the only time you may need a tooth extraction.
Some other reasons for a tooth extraction include:
- Excessive tooth decay
- Tooth infection
- Crowding
Tooth extraction and wisdom tooth extraction are relatively quick outpatient procedures done with supportive sedation, including local anesthesia and conscious sedation.
What to Expect During Your Tooth Extraction
The Sixth Line Family Dental process for tooth extractions begins with us walking you through why an extraction is recommended and what to expect both during the procedure and after.
Our dentist will take an X-ray of your tooth and discuss any possible medical conditions you may have before approving you for extraction.
It’s essential to follow your dentist’s instructions leading up to the extraction. Your tooth extraction will either be simple or surgical, depending on whether your tooth is visible or impacted.
Simple Extraction
Simple extraction involves using a local anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth so you will feel pressure during the procedure.
We’ll then use an instrument called an elevator to loosen your tooth and forceps to remove it.
Surgical Extraction
During surgical extraction, you’ll most likely need both local anesthesia and general anesthesia, depending on your medical conditions.
Following your anesthetic, your dentist will create a flap by making an incision in your gums. They will then carefully lift the flap to remove the tooth.
Recovery Following Extraction
Typically, it only takes a few days to recover after a tooth extraction procedure. You can take the following steps to help make the recovery process as smooth as possible:
- Rest and relax for the first 24 hours
- Avoid smoking immediately following extraction
- Use pillows to prop your head up when you lie down
- Slowly reintroduce regular foods into your diet
- Take any medications as prescribed
What to Expect During Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure done to remove one or more wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth usually appear between the ages of 17 and 25.
Issues with wisdom teeth can arise when they erupt and don’t have enough room to grow or develop normally in your mouth. When this occurs, surgery is required to remove them. This irregular eruption of wisdom teeth are referred to as impacted wisdom teeth.
Our wisdom tooth extraction procedure at Sixth Line Family Dental is an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll go home the same day. Because of the use of supportive sedation, it’s advised that you have someone accompany you to and from the procedure. Please call us at our Oakville clinic if you have any questions about dental surgical procedures.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction Surgery
During your wisdom tooth extraction, your dentist will:
- Make an incision in your gums to get to the tooth and bone
- Clean up any bone that restricts access
- Remove the impacted tooth
- Clean the removal site
- Stitch the wound back up
- Use gauze on the extraction site to manage bleeding and help a clot form
Recovery After Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Following wisdom tooth extraction, your recovery process can vary. You can expect some bleeding along with swelling and bruising. Replacing the gauze over the extraction site can help manage bleeding and your dentist may recommend pain relievers to deal with the swelling and bruising.
It’s essential to follow your dentist’s recovery plan following the procedure, including monitoring your diet and physical activity following surgery.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us following wisdom tooth extraction if you experience:
- Excessive bleeding
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Swelling that worsens over 2 or 3 days
- Persistent numbness or loss of feeling
